Center for Wound Management and Hyperbaric Medicine

The Center for Wound Management and Hyperbaric Medicine at Olympia Medical Center combines several modes of medical care to treat patients with chronic, non-healing wounds.  This outpatient program facilitates healing of body and mind, allowing patients to more fully enjoy life.

Every year between 4 and 5 million Americans suffer from chronic non-healing wounds.  For patients with conditions such as Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Vascular Disease and Venous Stasis, the healing of wounds is often a slow, frustrating process using conventional topical and pharmaceutical wound-care methods.  In conjunction with other courses of treatment, however, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) jump-starts the body's natural defense systems, allowing wounds to heal at a gradual, steady pace.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a simple, non-invasive and painless way of delivering high doses of oxygen to the body.  While lying comfortably within a pressurized chamber, patients breathe 100% oxygen, causing the oxygen to enter the bloodstream and to be diffused throughout the body.  HBOT stimulates, facilitates and and creates natural pathways for the body to help heal itself, including:

  • The growth of new blood vessels
  • Reduction of edema (swelling)
  • Increased oxygen delivery to tissues
  • Effective treatment of certain types of infections
