Rehabilitation Services

At Olympia Medical Center, our rehabilitation services provide patients the opportunity to relieve pain and regain independence.  Whether you have lost function due to an illness or injury, our rehab services strive to help patients resume the activities of daily living despite changes in their physical status.

Our rehab services provide care to patients experiencing a broad range of medical problems, including: arthritis, gait and balance problems, industrial medicine injuries, joint replacement, neck and back pain, orthopedic problems, orthopedic surgeries, stroke and other neurological conditions, and wounds and amputation.

Our Treatment Team

Our team approach to treatment is geared towards individualized care.  Staff members work with patients on setting attainable goals and developing a specially designed treatment plan.  We understand that each patient's need is unique, which is why our team includes physical and occupational therapists, and speech/language pathologists, who provide specialized care for a wide range of conditions.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapist use some of the latest equipment/modalities including bicycles, upper body bikes, and much more.  Our programs are designed to improve balance, coordination, motion, strength and mobility.

Occupational Therapy/Hand Therapy

For people with hand, shoulder or elbow problems, occupational therapy helps to re-educate patients on the activities of daily living such as functional skills for self-care ie., bathing, dressing, meal preparation and shopping.  As part of our occupational therapy services, Olympia Medical Center offers a hand therapy program.  Our hands are vital and complex instruments used almost continuously for self-care, work and leisure.  Hand therapy improves function for many problems, including:

  • Repetitive strain problems, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, lateral epicondylitis
  • Arthritis, tenosynovitis, ganglion cysts (pre or post operative conditions)
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy and neurological limitations

Speech Therapy

For patients who have difficulty communicating, such as after a stroke, our speech/language pathologists develop treatment plans to improve speech, comprehension, writing skills, cognition (thinking skills) and swallowing.

For patients with swallowing problems we offer videoflouroscopic swallowing studies.  moving x-rays are taken as a patient swallows and the results are recorded on a videotape for further analysis.  The study allows specialists to identify aspiration and test treatment techniques that may improve swallow functions, such as vitalstim therapy.

Inpatient and Outpatient Availability

Rehabilitation services are available on an inpatient and outpatient basis.  Many patients who begin rehabilitation in the hospital, often return for follow-up therapy as an outpatient.  For patients who don't require hospitalization, a physician referral is needed for outpatient therapy.  Our comprehensive program is designed to not only get patients back home, but to help patients resume their daily activities independently.
